EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait, taken by the renowned British photographer Madame Yevonde in 1941, showcases the youthful elegance and charm of Deborah Mitford (1920-), the youngest of the six Mitford sisters. Debo, as she was affectionately known, is depicted here shortly before her marriage to the Honorable Andrew Cavendish, who later became the 11th Duke of Devonshire. The future Duchess of Devonshire exudes an air of refinement and sophistication, her timeless beauty accentuated by her chic bob hairstyle and simple yet elegant attire. But what truly steals the show in this photograph is Debo's lucky whippet, who adds a playful and endearing touch to the image. The whippet, adorned with a stunning string of pearls, gazes intently at the camera with a mischievous expression that is impossible not to find endearing. The pearls, a luxurious accessory for a human, add a whimsical touch to the pet, highlighting the unique bond between woman and her beloved companion. Madame Yevonde, a pioneer of portrait photography, expertly captures the essence of Debo's character and the special connection she shares with her cherished pet. This portrait is a testament to the timeless allure of the Mitford sisters and the enduring appeal of the human-animal bond.
