EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken circa 1905, we find ourselves at the Temple of Wat Pho in Bangkok, Thailand, specifically at the entrance of its hallowed grounds. The temple, officially named Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhlaram Ratchaworamahawihan, is renowned for its colossal Reclining Buddha statue and is a significant Buddhist religious site in the Phra Nakhon district. As we gaze upon the image, our attention is drawn to the pair of imposing Chinese guardian statues standing sentinel at the entrance. These ancient rock giants, each over 3 meters tall, are believed to have been imported to Thailand as ballast on trading ships from China during the late Ayutthaya period. Their purpose was to protect the temple and its sacred treasures, and they have stood steadfastly at their posts for centuries. The intricately carved stone figures, with their fierce expressions and powerful stances, exude an aura of strength and protection. Their robust physiques and traditional Chinese attire, including the distinctive conical hats, further emphasize their origins. The statues are a testament to the rich cultural exchange that occurred between Thailand and China throughout history. The temple complex, with its sixteen gates guarded by these Chinese giants, is a breathtaking sight to behold. The serene atmosphere, punctuated by the occasional sounds of monks chanting and the gentle tinkling of temple bells, adds to the spiritual experience of visiting this important historical site. The enduring presence of these guardian statues serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted connections between Thailand and China, and the lasting impact of their shared cultural heritage.
