Framed Photos from Mary Evans Picture Library
Chelsea Follies Revue by Archibald de Bear and R. Arkell
Chelsea Follies Revue devised by Archibald de Bear (1882 - 1959) and Reginald Arkell (1889 - 1962). Presented by R.H. Gillespie with music by Wolseley Charles (1889 - 1962) and Desmond Carter (15 June 1895 3 February 1939). It was first produced at The Victoria Palace Theatre on 17th December 1930. This is a large postcard listing the cast members on the reverse, with Nervo and Knox the stars, (Jimmy Nervo and Teddy Knox were part of the original Crazy Gang). It leaves room for an address but not for a message. The design with various figures seen against a giant painters palette uses Chelseas association with art and artists. The Times thought that the staging was old fashioned and lacked imagination, but that the performance itself was most spirited. Date: 1930

EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard showcases the Chelsea Follies Revue, an entertaining extravaganza produced at the prestigious Victoria Palace Theatre in London on December 17, 1930. Devised by Archibald de Bear and Reginald Arkell, the revue boasted an impressive roster of talent, with Jimmy Nervo and Teddy Knox, former members of the original Crazy Gang, as the stars. The reverse of the postcard lists the cast members, leaving room for an address but not for a message. The design of the postcard features various figures against a giant painter's palette, reflecting Chelsea's strong association with art and artists. The Times critic noted that the staging appeared old-fashioned and lacked imagination, but praised the performance itself as most spirited. The revue was presented by R.H. Gillespie and featured music by Wolseley Charles and Desmond Carter. The Chelsea Follies Revue offered a delightful mix of music, comedy, and dance, with a diverse cast of characters that included a footballer, a motorcycle rider, and many more. The postcard's whimsical design, with its painter and his paints, adds to the playful and artistic spirit of the production. This postcard is a charming reminder of the vibrant and entertaining world of London's West End theatre scene in the 1930s.
