EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the aftermath of a significant military engagement during World War I, specifically the failed Turkish attempt to cross the Suez Canal at Ismailia, Egypt, on 3-4 February 1915. In this image, some of the 25 Turkish pontoons, which were used in their ill-fated attempt to bridge the canal, lie destroyed on the banks. The Suez Canal, a vital strategic waterway connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, was a major objective for both the Allied and Central Powers during the Great War. The Turks, under the command of Djemal Pasha, launched an attack on the British-held canal with the intention of seizing control and cutting off the Allied supply line to India and the Far East. However, their efforts were thwarted when the British forces, led by General John Maxwell, successfully repelled the attack. The captured Turkish pontoons serve as a poignant reminder of the intense and pivotal action that unfolded along the banks of the Suez Canal during this significant moment in world history.
