EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of patriotism and duty as Captain Oliver Albert Critchley (1873-1953) of Alberta, Canada, is flanked by his three brave sons who had all answered the call to serve in the British Army during the First World War. From left to right, we see William Robert Critchley, running a machine gun detachment in an infantry battalion; Captain Alfred Cecil Critchley, the founder of the Greyhound Racing Association in Britain and a popular society figure, known as "Critch"; and John Albert Critchley, both of whom served in the Strathcona Horse and played in their regimental polo team. Captain A.C. Critchley and J.A. Critchley were part of the Canadian Regulars. The Critchley family's deep connection to Canada is evident in their Canadian uniforms, and their strong commitment to the cause is reflected in their determined expressions. This heartwarming image, taken in 1914, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by families during the First World War.
