Camel Caravan close to Valley of Tombs, Palmyra, Syria

Camel Caravan close to Palmyra, Homs Governate, Syria. Dating back to the Neolithic, Palmyra was first attested in the early second millennium BC as a caravan stop for travellers crossing the Syrian Desert. Outside the ancient walls, to the west, the Palmyrenes constructed a series of large-scale funerary monuments which now form the so-called Valley of Tombs, a 1 km long necropolis (shown in this card). The monuments numbered more than 50 and were mostly in the shape of towers reaching up to four levels. Date: circa 1930

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a camel caravan making its way through the arid Syrian Desert, with the ancient city of Palmyra and its renowned Valley of Tombs serving as a breathtaking backdrop. Dating back to the Neolithic period, Palmyra was a vital caravan stop for travelers traversing the desert, and the site's rich history is evident in the grand architecture and monumental structures that still stand today. Located outside the ancient city walls to the west, the Palmyrenes constructed a vast necropolis, now known as the Valley of Tombs, which spans over 1 km in length. The necropolis is home to more than 50 large-scale funerary monuments, mostly in the form of towering structures reaching up to four levels. These monuments, which date back to the early second millennium BC, are a testament to the wealth and power of the ancient Palmyrene civilization. The Valley of Tombs is just one of the many UNESCO World Heritage sites that Palmyra boasts, making it a must-visit destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts. As the sun sets over the desert landscape, the camel caravan continues its journey, leaving a trail of dust in its wake, while the ancient city and its necropolis stand proudly, preserving the stories of the past for future generations to explore and appreciate.
