EDITORS COMMENTS
A New Connection to the Past: The Bridge at Hertford College, Oxford (1913) This photograph showcases a new feature added to Hertford College in Oxford, England, in 1913. The bridge, designed by the esteemed architect Sir T. G. Jackson RA, connects the old and new buildings along New College Lane. The bridge's construction marked an essential step in the evolution of this historic institution, which has been a cornerstone of higher education in the University of Oxford since its founding in 1249. Sir Thomas Graham Jackson, a renowned British architect, is known for his innovative designs that seamlessly blend traditional and modern elements. His design for Hertford College's bridge is no exception. The bridge's sleek, modern design contrasts beautifully with the old, Gothic-style buildings it connects, creating a unique harmony between the past and the present. The bridge's design is characterized by its octagonal shape and spherical torus supports, which add an element of intrigue and sophistication. The bridge's construction not only improved the functionality of the college but also served as a testament to the institution's commitment to preserving its rich history while embracing progress. The bridge's connection of the old and new buildings is more than just a physical link; it represents the continuity of knowledge and tradition that has defined Hertford College and the University of Oxford for centuries. This photograph is a reminder of the enduring legacy of Oxford's academic past and its commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation.
