EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite detail from the marble sculpture of the Berlin Goddess, also known as the Kore from Keratea, dates back to the 6th century BC. Discovered in the ancient cemetery of Keratea, located south of Attica in Greece, this Archaic Greek masterpiece is now proudly displayed at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany. The young goddess is depicted in a divine and elegant pose, carrying a pomegranate in one hand and a grenade in the other. The intricate details of her polychrome costume, with its intricate folds and delicate patterns, are still visible despite the passage of time. Her hat, adorned with a distinctive red ribbon, sits gracefully atop her head. The goddess's face, with its serene expression and almond-shaped eyes, exudes a sense of calm and beauty. Her hands, with their long, slender fingers, are rigidly posed, adding to the overall sense of grace and formality. The bracelet on her left wrist and the necklace around her neck are intricately painted, adding to the sculpture's vibrant and colorful appearance. Despite being over 2,500 years old, the Berlin Goddess remains a captivating and enigmatic figure from ancient Greece. Her polychromy, which would have originally made her even more stunning, is still evident in the subtle traces of red paint that remain on her costume and accessories. This detail image offers a closer look at the intricacies of this remarkable work of art, showcasing the skill and artistry of the ancient Greek sculptors.
