Born in 1872 in Darmstadt, Germany, Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. Her marriage to Tsar Nicholas II in 1894 united the Russian and German royal families, a union that would ultimately have fateful consequences for both nations.
