EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph, titled "Katsina, Jakoba, Lussi, Dombu and Felatah," is an intriguing glimpse into the rich cultural diversity of African peoples during the 19th century. The print, taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, offers a vivid and detailed portrayal of five distinct ethnic groups: Katsina from Nigeria, Jakoba from the Hausa kingdom, Lussi from the Chad region, Dombu from Sierraleone, and Felatah from the Jarribakingdom. The Katsina man, dressed in a flowing robe and headdress, is depicted with a stern expression and a staff in hand, reflecting his role as a traditional leader or warrior in his community. The Jakoba woman, adorned with intricate beadwork and a large headdress, is shown carrying a bowl on her head, a common practice among women in the Hausa kingdom. The Lussi man and woman, both dressed in simple yet colorful garments, represent the people of the Lussi region in Chad. The Dombu man, with his distinctive facial scarification and body paint, is a powerful symbol of his identity and status in his community. The Felatah man, wearing a flowing robe and carrying a shield, is a representation of the Felatah people from the Jarribakingdom in Sierra Leone. This ethnographic record provides valuable insights into the customs, costumes, and history of these African peoples, offering a window into their unique cultures and traditions. The handcolored lithograph technique adds a level of detail and realism, making these portraits not only historically significant but also visually stunning works of art. Overall, this print is an important reminder of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Africa, and the importance of preserving and celebrating the traditions and histories of its many peoples.
