EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the intriguing relationship between Acacia ants and the Acacia Whistling Thorn and Stinging Acacia trees, as depicted in this print from Mary Evans Prints Online. Acacia ants, specifically the species of Pseudomyrmex and Crematogaster, have formed a unique symbiotic partnership with these Acacia trees, known as Acacia galls or "thorn galls." The ants protect the trees from herbivorous insects by guarding the tree's branches and galls, while the trees provide the ants with shelter and food in the form of extrafloral nectaries and specialized gall structures. The Acacia Whistling Thorn tree (Acacia drepanolobium) is native to Africa and is easily identified by its distinctive, curved thorns that resemble whistles when blown by the wind. The Stinging Acacia tree, on the other hand, is known for its painful stinging thorns. Both trees host various ant species, with the ants living in the galls found on the tree's branches. This photograph provides a close-up view of the galls, revealing the intricate structures that house the ants and their brood. The ants' nests can be seen nestled within the galls, providing a safe haven for the colony. The presence of these ants not only benefits the tree but also plays a crucial role in the overall health and diversity of the African ecosystem. This historical photograph not only showcases the beauty and complexity of nature but also highlights the fascinating partnership between trees and ants, a testament to the intricate web of life that exists in the natural world.
