EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Young Woman Surrounded Briars Lightning Roses" by Artokoloro, part of the Liszt Collection, transports us to a world of enchantment. Inspired by Thomas Malory's epic tale "Le Morte d'Arthur" this chapter heading illustration from Dent's 1893-94 edition is brought to life through the artistic genius of Aubrey Vincent Beardsley. In this stylized image, we see a young woman standing amidst a backdrop of thorny branches. Her long, loose hair cascades down her back as she stands gracefully in a flowing shift dress. The intricate details captured by Beardsley's pen and brush evoke both delicacy and strength. The juxtaposition of briars, lightning, and roses adds an air of mystery to the scene. It hints at the challenges faced by the protagonist in their quest for love and honor. This drawing serves as an invitation for readers to delve into Malory's legendary narrative with renewed curiosity. Beardsley's skillful use of carbon black ink and graphite brings depth and texture to every stroke on the sheet measuring 4 1/2 x 3 1/4 inches (115 x 83 cm). His attention to detail captivates our imagination as we explore each line that forms this mesmerizing composition. As we gaze upon this evocative artwork, we are transported not only to Arthurian times but also into Beardsley's own creative mind. Born in Brighton
