Created with black chalk and heightened white, this squared drawing on beige paper measures 8 1/2 x 6 9/16 inches (216 x 167 cm). Wicar, a French artist born in Lille in 1762 and later residing in Rome, demonstrates his meticulous attention to detail through careful shading and subtle white highlights. In this study of drapery, Wicar masterfully conveys the intricate folds of toga fabric as it is gathered, tucked, and draped on a model. The squaring of the sheet indicates that this drawing was done as preparation for a painting specifically featuring the figure of Augustus at its center.
