EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a remarkable engraving of a Rhinoceros, with an intriguing history behind it. Created in 1542 by Enea Vico, an Italian artist hailing from Parma, this piece is a copy in reverse after the renowned German artist Albrecht Dürer's original work. The engraving sheet measures 10 1/4 x 14 5/16 inches (26.3 x 63.3 cm), and it has been trimmed outside the platemark. What makes this particular print even more fascinating is that its date was changed to reflect "1548". This alteration adds an air of mystery and raises questions about why such modification took place and who may have been responsible for it. The image itself captures the majestic presence of a rhinoceros, showcasing intricate details meticulously engraved onto paper. It serves as a testament to both Vico's skillful craftsmanship and Dürer's influence on artists across Europe during that era. As we admire this exquisite print, we are reminded of how art can transcend time and borders, bringing together different cultures through shared inspiration. The Liszt Collection allows us to delve into the world of historical prints like this one, offering glimpses into artistic legacies that continue to captivate audiences today.
