EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection transports us back to the vibrant and alluring world of New Yoshiwara Shin Yoshiwara in 18th century Japan. Titled "Ten Summer Scenes in the Eastern Capital" this series by Torii Kiyonaga captures a mesmerizing moment within a teahouse. In this particular scene, we are drawn into a room where a courtesan and her youngest attendant, known as kamuro, engage in an intriguing interaction. The kamuro stands just outside the room, pointing up at a cuckoo bird while stealing glances at the standing courtesan beside her. The courtesan holds a delicate fan in her left hand, exuding elegance and grace. Seated nearby is an enigmatic man dressed in a striking blue kimono. With his hand pressed against his ear, he appears to be intently listening to something or someone beyond our view. Perhaps he is an important figure or even the manager of this bustling teahouse. The exquisite artistry of Torii Kiyonaga shines through this paper color woodcut piece that measures 259mm high by 193mm wide. Created between 1784 and 1788, it offers us not only a glimpse into the daily life of New Yoshiwara but also showcases Kiyonaga's mastery of capturing intricate details and conveying emotions through his work. This remarkable print serves as both an artistic treasure and historical documentation of Japan's rich cultural heritage during that period
