EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases Frans Floris I's masterpiece, "David Playing the Harp before Saul" created in 1555. The chiaroscuro woodcut technique employed by Floris brings this biblical scene to life with its remarkable play of light and shadow. Printed from four blocks, including a black line block and three tone blocks in shades of gray-green, the intricate details are beautifully captured on laid paper. In this iconic artwork, we witness David serenading King Saul with his harp. The composition exudes a sense of tranquility as David's fingers gracefully glide across the strings while his gaze remains fixed upon Saul. The interplay between light and dark adds depth to their figures, emphasizing their emotional connection during this intimate moment. Frans Floris I masterfully captures the essence of music's power to soothe troubled souls through his meticulous attention to detail and skillful use of chiaroscuro. Each stroke reveals textures and contours that lend an air of realism to the scene. This print serves as a testament to both Frans Floris I's artistic prowess and our enduring fascination with biblical narratives depicted through visual art. It invites us into a world where music becomes a conduit for solace and harmony amidst turmoil—a timeless reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is always room for beauty and hope.
