Framed Print of The world's largest city

The world's largest city. In 1944 it is said that the community of Kiruna is planned to be reorganized from a rural municipality to a city. Plans that at this time are a few years ahead in time, but which according to Kiruna's municipal board chairman Hjalmar Nystroem are firm. Kiruna is planned to become the world's largest city with an area of 14, 000 square kilometers. An area that is 18 times as large as New York's and eight times as large as London's. The two world metropolises, which at the time had around ten million inhabitants each. Kiruna has around 18, 500. The entire north-western Lapland mountain world will lie within the city limits, which in the north and west coincide with the national border and, among other things, reach up to Treriksroeset. The work behind the plan is the work of the well-known Kiruna lawyer Vilhelm Carlsson. One of the reasons for the creation of the giant city is the current tax liability of the mining company LKAB, which only contributes a tenth of its taxed income within the parish. It would take until 1 January 1948 before the decision won legal force and Kiruna became a city. The picture shows Hjalmar Nystroem with the photographer Borg Mesch, born 17 December 1869, died 20 October 1956. He was something of a photographic pioneer and is known for his pictures of the settler community Kiruna and railway builders. Sweden 1944. Kristoffersson ref H146-2
