EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken by Damian Grady, transports us back in time to the haunting remnants of a significant chapter in history. The print showcases the wrecks at Stoke Saltings, where the muddy flats of River Medway hold secrets from the First World War. In this poignant image, we are confronted with two contrasting vessels that have succumbed to the passage of time. Dominating the foreground is UB122, a German U-Boat that once prowled beneath treacherous waters. Now reduced to rusted metal and decaying wood, it serves as a somber reminder of past conflicts and lives lost at sea. Nestled beside UB122 is an unexpected sight - the sailing boat Swale. Once graceful and majestic on open waters, it now lies embedded in mud flats like an ancient relic frozen in time. Its skeletal frame tells tales of countless voyages and adventures before meeting its final resting place here. The composition's aerial perspective adds another layer of intrigue to this evocative scene. From above, we gain a unique vantage point that allows us to appreciate both vessels' scale against their surroundings – vast stretches of desolate mud flats stretching into infinity. Damian Grady's expert eye has captured not just two abandoned ships but also echoes from our collective pasts. This photograph invites contemplation about human resilience amidst conflict and nature's relentless reclamation over man-made structures. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print, let us remember those who sailed these seas long ago
