EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Ramsgate High Street in a bygone era, between 1945 and 1965. The image showcases a bustling street view, looking northwest with an array of shops lining both sides. In the background, No. 113 stands proudly on a junction with Chatham Street, its curved front adorned with alternating blind windows. The foreground reveals an architectural gem; a shop on the right boasting timber-framed second floors complete with charming gables and jettied windows. Across from it stands E. J. Lovely & Son, emanating an air of nostalgia that only time can bestow. Further up the street, a building proudly displays a large sign for Nestles Milk on its centred corner bay. As we delve into this snapshot of history, contemporary cars dotting the scene remind us of how much has changed since then. A poster catches our eye as it adorns one of the shopfronts while people go about their daily routines in this vibrant hub. John Pennycuick's lens skillfully freezes this moment in time for us to appreciate and reflect upon Ramsgate's past glory. This print serves as both a visual feast and an invaluable historical document that transports us back to an era where timber-framed buildings stood tall amidst thriving businesses along Ramsgate High Street - forever etching their mark on Thanet's rich heritage.
