EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Aerofilms Collection, taken in June 1930, we witness the bustling activity of Wootton Bassett United Dairies in Wiltshire, England. The industrial complex, which opened its doors in 1908 as The Dairy Supply Company before merging with United Dairies in 1915, is a testament to the region's rich agricultural and industrial heritage. The sprawling dairy complex, with its red-roofed buildings and neatly arranged structures, dominates the scene. The intricate layout of the site reveals a well-organized operation, with various structures dedicated to different aspects of dairy production. Smoke billows from the chimneys, signaling the transformation of raw milk into various dairy products. The Beaufort Brewery buildings can be seen in the top right corner of the image, adding another layer of industry to the scene. The railway line, snaking through the frame, highlights the importance of transportation in facilitating the distribution of these essential goods. Sadly, this historic site is no longer in existence. The dairy finally closed its doors in February 2003, and the premises have since been demolished to make way for new housing developments, including Cloatley Crescent and Dior Drive. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the area's industrial past and the role that dairies played in the local community. This aerial view not only showcases the architectural and historical significance of Wootton Bassett United Dairies but also provides a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of agriculture, industry, and transportation in the early 20th century.
