EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic M6 Motorway, specifically on the Stafford By-pass in Staffordshire. Taken during the 1960s, it showcases both a B type structure in the foreground and an Fc type structure in the background, which are none other than bridges that would soon connect communities and facilitate smoother transportation. The image offers a general view looking northward along the by-pass, with workers diligently applying asphalt surfacing on the west carriageway. The scene is bustling with activity as construction vehicles traverse back and forth, leaving their mark on what would become one of England's most vital roadways. It is fascinating to note that this ambitious project commenced its groundwork in September 1960 and was completed just over two years later when it opened to traffic in December 1962. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess of that era. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this snapshot not only commemorates an important milestone but also pays homage to civil engineering achievements from decades past. It reminds us of how far we have come since then while highlighting our ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure for future generations.
