EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Henry Taunt in 1890, presents a tranquil scene of the River Thames at Cholsey in Oxfordshire. The image showcases the low, flat ferry boat, patiently waiting for the corn wagons to arrive. The ferry played a crucial role in transporting goods and people between Cholsey and Little Stoke across the river. A passenger ferry is also moored alongside, ready to transport people, adding to the bustling activity at the water's edge. In the distance, the imposing structure of the Berkshire County Lunatic Asylum at Moulsford can be seen. Built in 1870, this grand edifice now known as Fair Mile Hospital, looms large over the landscape. The Victorian era, as depicted in this photograph, was a time of significant change and progress. The transportation of goods and people was a major challenge, and the use of ferries played a vital role in connecting communities. The presence of the asylum underscores the social and medical advancements of the time, reflecting the growing concern for the welfare of the mentally ill. Henry Taunt's masterful composition and use of light and shadow create a striking image that transports us back to a bygone era. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of transportation and social care in the Cholsey area and offers a glimpse into the daily life of the Victorian era.
