Bradfield House OP01731

Bradfield House, Bradfield, Uffculme, Devon, April 1852.
Unknown photographer, dilute albumen print from a paper negative. One of a remarkable series of photographs taken before and after the architect John Hayward extensively remodelled and restored the property for Sir John Walrond between 1852 and 1854. The house had been the seat of the Walrond family since the 13th century, and incorporated a medieval hall at its core. It is unclear whether the architect or the owner, or both, were responsible for recording building work, which included moving the main entrance to the south front, stripping roughcast and adding a service wing to the west

This print showcases Bradfield House in all its glory, capturing a moment frozen in time. Taken in April 1852 by an unknown photographer, this dilute albumen print from a paper negative is part of a remarkable series documenting the extensive remodeling and restoration undertaken by architect John Hayward for Sir John Walrond. Bradfield House, located in Uffculme, Devon, has been the cherished seat of the Walrond family since the 13th century. This photograph provides a unique glimpse into its rich history and architectural transformation. The house's medieval hall forms its core, lending an air of grandeur to the entire structure. The details surrounding who commissioned these photographs remain shrouded in mystery. It is unclear whether it was the architect or the owner himself—or perhaps both—who felt compelled to document every step of this monumental building project. Notably, significant changes were made during this renovation period. The main entrance was relocated to face south while roughcast was stripped away from certain areas. Additionally, a service wing was thoughtfully added to enhance functionality and convenience. Preserved within Historic England's archives as part of their picturing England collection, this image transports us back to Victorian times—a testament to our enduring fascination with history and architecture.
