EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1907, offering a glimpse into the YMCA reading room located within the grandeur of Exeter Hall in London. The interior view showcases a space that was once bustling with activity and intellectual pursuits. Today, this historic site is occupied by the Strand Palace Hotel, but its significance as the headquarters of YMCA during Edwardian times remains etched in history. The YMCA, established in 1844 with a mission to provide Christian fellowship primarily for clerks and shop assistants, quickly evolved into an institution serving a much broader audience. This photograph captures not only the architectural beauty of Exeter Hall but also highlights how it became a hub for individuals seeking knowledge and connection. As we observe this image frozen in time, we can envision men engrossed in books or engaged in lively discussions amidst elegant surroundings. The atmosphere exudes an air of intellectual curiosity and camaraderie. It serves as a reminder of how important spaces like these were for fostering personal growth and community development during that era. Photographed by H Bedford Lemere and Co. , renowned for their ability to capture historical moments through their lens, this image allows us to travel back over a century ago when education, fellowship, and enlightenment thrived within these walls. It stands as testament to both the enduring legacy of YMCA's commitment to serving society at large and Lemere's talent for preserving significant moments from our past.
