The Weavers, Canterbury, Kent

EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a moment frozen in time, showcasing the rich history and architectural beauty of this charming English town. In this print by Laurence Goldman, we are transported back to April 1960 when the photograph was taken. The timber-framed buildings on Kings Bridge stand proudly as a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Walloon weavers who once occupied these premises in the 17th century. These skilled artisans adapted these structures for their looms, utilizing the nearby river for finishing cloth. The flowing water played an essential role in perfecting their craft. As we delve deeper into this image, it becomes evident that progress did not halt with weaving alone. Over time, fulling mills were ingeniously repurposed for paper-making purposes within these very same buildings. This evolution speaks volumes about Canterbury's ability to adapt and embrace new industries while preserving its historical roots. Laurence Goldman expertly captures both the grandeur of Tudor architecture and the intricate details that make each building unique. His lens transports us through time as if we are standing right there on Kings Bridge ourselves. This print serves as a poignant reminder of our shared heritage and invites us to appreciate how past generations shaped our present landscape. It is a visual treasure that allows us to connect with Canterbury's vibrant history while marveling at its enduring beauty.
