EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in Leeds' history. The image, taken by the talented photographer Eileen Deste between 1966 and 1974, showcases the transformation of St Marys Street towards St Marys Church in Quarry Hill, Leeds, West Yorkshire. In this snapshot frozen in time, an elderly man stands alone amidst the demolished street. The terraces that once lined St Marys Street had been torn down by the early 1950s due to slum clearance efforts. The church itself managed to survive until 1979 before meeting its own fate of demolition. The composition exudes a sense of urban decay and change as it portrays a cobbled road leading towards the now derelict or ruined church. This image serves as a powerful reminder of progress and how cities evolve over time. Eileen Deste's skillful lens beautifully captures both the architectural beauty of the Georgian-style church and the stark reality of post-war demolition. It invites viewers to reflect on themes such as loss, preservation, and societal transformations. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Historic England's collection, we are transported back to an era where old structures made way for new beginnings – a visual testament to our ever-changing world.
