Aerial view of floating dock, Southampton, Hampshire. Photographed by Aerofilms, 16th March 1928.
This oblique aerial photograph shows the floating dry dock at Southampton in March 1928. To allow a ship to enter, the dock was partially submerged by filling ballast tanks with water. The ship was towed into the dock and the tanks pumped out, raising the ship out of the water. The ship's exposed hull could then be accessed for repairs and renovation. Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame.
