EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful and influential couple, William III and Mary II, who reigned over Britain during the late 17th century. The portrait captures their regal profiles, highlighting their status as monarchs of both Britain and Ireland. William III, also known as William of Orange, hailed from Holland while his wife Mary II was British-born. Their reign began in 1689 following the Glorious Revolution when they ascended to the throne together. As staunch Protestants, they played a significant role in shaping religious dynamics within the country during this period. This engraving beautifully portrays them with an air of authority and elegance befitting their royal stature. The House of Orange is prominently featured in this artwork as it symbolizes their lineage and connection to Dutch royalty. The print collector has expertly captured every detail, allowing us to appreciate not only their physical appearance but also gain insight into the political climate of that era. Queen Mary II's untimely death in 1694 marked a turning point for King William III's reign; however, this image immortalizes them together forever as a power couple who left an indelible mark on British history. Their legacy continues to fascinate historians and enthusiasts alike due to their contributions towards strengthening Protestantism and establishing stability within Great Britain during a pivotal time.
