EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to a tea plantation in Java, Indonesia, circa 1902. The artist behind this mesmerizing stereoscopic card is CH Graves, who skillfully captured the essence of this agricultural scene. In the foreground, we see a group of Javanese laborers diligently engaged in tea picking. Their occupation as tea pickers required them to carefully select only the finest leaves from the lush tea plants surrounding them. The sheer magnitude of the plantation stretches far into the distance, showcasing row upon row of neatly cultivated tea plants. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this image, emphasizing both the beauty and hard work that went into cultivating these precious leaves. It serves as a testament to not only nature's bounty but also human dedication and perseverance. As we gaze at this photograph, we are transported to an era when manual labor was integral to sustaining economies and communities.
