St. Mary's Church, West Brompton, Consecrated on Tuesday, 1850. Creator: Unknown
St. Mary's Church, West Brompton, [London], Consecrated on Tuesday, 1850. This Church was consecrated...by the Right Reverend Charles James, Lord Bishop of London. It is in the form of a cross, and is from the design of George Godwin, Esq. F.R.S...The walls are of stone; the chancel is paved with Minton's tiles...The Church contains accommodation for 750 persons; the district, however, has, we believe, nearly 4000 inhabitants. The ceremonial of consecration was conducted with the usual observances, a large attendance of the clergy of the neighbouring districts assisting on the occasion; and the Church was filled to overflowing'. St. Mary's Church, West Brompton: A Gothic Masterpiece Consecrated in 1850 This evocative image captures St. Mary's Church in West Brompton, London, during the Victorian era. Consecrated on Tuesday, 1850, this beautiful Neo-Gothic structure was designed by George Godwin, Esq., F.R.S. (Fellow of the Royal Society), and consecrated by the Right Reverend Charles James, Lord Bishop of London. The church, which is in the form of a cross, boasts walls made of stone and a chancel paved with Minton's tiles. With a capacity to accommodate 750 persons, it served a district believed to have nearly 4,000 inhabitants. The ceremonial consecration was attended by a large gathering of local clergy, and the church was filled to its brim. Godwin's design, inspired by the Gothic Revival, showcases intricate details and a sense of grandeur. The exterior, with its pointed arches and ornate carvings, is a testament to the architectural prowess of the time. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the religious and architectural landscape of 19th-century Britain. St. Mary's Church, with its rich history and stunning design, continues to stand as a significant landmark in the Brompton, Kensington and Chelsea area of London.
