EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking engraving is a portrait of Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, who served as Secretary of State and Lord Treasurer to King James I of England and Scotland, also known as James VI of Scotland. The portrait was created by renowned English engraver, Richard Earlom, and is part of the collection "Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second," published in London in 1815 by Samuel Woodburn. Cecil, dressed in the fashionable attire of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, is depicted wearing a high-collared doublet, adorned with intricate lace detailing. The collar, a symbol of wealth and status, is a notable feature of the portrait. Cecil's stern expression and serious gaze convey a sense of authority and wisdom, fitting for his political role as a trusted advisor to the monarch. Born in 1543, Cecil rose to prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, serving in various diplomatic and political roles. He continued to hold influential positions under King James I, who succeeded Elizabeth I in 1603. Cecil's tenure as Lord Treasurer and Secretary of State saw him navigate political tensions and financial challenges, earning him the respect and admiration of his contemporaries. Cecil passed away in 1612, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential figures of the late Tudor and early Stuart periods in British history. This portrait is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the English aristocracy during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, providing a glimpse into the fashion, politics, and power dynamics of the time.
