EDITORS COMMENTS
Rising Sun from Bandai Bridge" is a stunning woodblock print created by the renowned Japanese artist Kobayashi Kiyochika between circa 1877 and circa 1880. This work of art is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). The print depicts the breathtaking sunrise over the Bandai Bridge in Niigata, Japan. The bridge, spanning the Shinano River, is shown in great detail, with its wooden structure and intricate design. The bridge serves as a thoroughfare, connecting the two banks of the river and allowing people and goods to pass through. In the foreground, we see a group of houses and buildings, their roofs and walls bathed in the soft morning light. The sun, depicted as a large, fiery orb, rises majestically behind the bridge, casting long shadows and illuminating the landscape. The print is a beautiful example of the Ukiyo-e (floating world) tradition, which emphasizes the transient beauty of the natural world. The use of color and perspective in the print is masterful, with the warm hues of the sunrise contrasting against the cooler tones of the water and the buildings. The print also showcases the scientific knowledge of the time, as the solar system and the continents are accurately depicted in the background. This woodblock print is a treasure of Asian art and a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, astronomy, or Japanese culture. It is currently housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world.
