EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Odin and Fenrir, Freyr and Surt" transports us back to the mythical world of Teutonic gods. Created in 1905 by Emil Doepler, this piece is part of the renowned book art collection called Valhalla: Gods of the Teutons. The image showcases Odin, the Allfather, alongside his loyal wolf companion Fenrir. The powerful presence of these figures evokes a sense of ancient wisdom and strength. Standing opposite them are Freyr, god of fertility and abundance, and Surt, ruler of Muspelheim - the realm of fire. Their contrasting energies create an intriguing visual balance within this chromolithography. Doepler's artistic style reflects elements from Art Nouveau with its intricate details and flowing lines. This fusion between allegory and literature brings to life characters from Germanic mythology such as Brunhild or Brynhildr from Wagner's opera Die Walkure. The composition draws inspiration from various sources including Norse mythology, medieval sagas like Nibelungenlied and Volsunga Saga, as well as Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen. It serves as a testament to Germany's rich history intertwined with pagan beliefs during the Viking Age. Displayed in a private collection today, this artwork offers viewers a glimpse into a time when gods walked among mortals on their way to Valhalla - where fallen warriors known as Einherjar awaited Ragnarok - the ultimate battle that would shape their destiny.
