EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th-century oil on panel painting, titled "The Marriage of Alexander the Great and Roxane of Bactria," by Gerard Hoet, transports us back to ancient Greece during the Dutch Golden Age. The scene depicts the marriage ceremony of Alexander III of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great, and Roxane, the queen of Bactria. The union is being blessed by a priest at a burning altar, in front of a niche with a statue of Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Alexander, dressed in royal attire, stands confidently with his hand on Roxane's shoulder, while she wears an ornate gown and veil. The couple is surrounded by a lively celebration, with dancers performing traditional Greek dances, musicians playing instruments, and guests enjoying a feast. The altar is ablaze with offerings, including loaves of bread and a burnt offering, symbolizing the union of the couple and their commitment to each other and their gods. The painting's rich colors and intricate details capture the grandeur and opulence of the occasion. This artwork, created during the Dutch Golden Age, showcases the influence of ancient Greek culture on European art and the importance of religious and ceremonial traditions in ancient societies. The painting is a testament to the heritage and history of both Greece and the Netherlands and is a must-see for anyone interested in art, history, or ancient civilizations.
