EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures James Schoolcraft Sherman, the 25th Vice President of the United States, during his tenure from 1909 to 1912. Born on November 8, 1855, in Rushville, New York, Sherman began his political career as a Member of Congress for New York from 1887 to 1891. He later served as a US Senator from 1893 to 1909. In this image, Sherman is depicted with a serious expression, his piercing eyes gazing intently into the distance. He is dressed in a formal suit and wears a bow tie, the fashion of the time. The setting is simple, with Sherman seated in a chair against a plain backdrop, his hands folded in his lap. The photograph was taken by the renowned Harris & Ewing photographic studio, founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze in 1896. The studio, which was based in Washington D.C., became one of the most prominent in the nation's capital, known for its high-quality portraits of politicians and other notable figures. Sherman's political career was marked by his dedication to the Republican Party and his commitment to the principles of law and order. He served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1891 to 1893, making him the youngest person to hold that position at the time. Sherman's vice presidency came about when he was chosen as the running mate of President William Howard Taft in 1908. The photograph captures a moment in history, a testament to Sherman's significant role in American politics during the early 20th century.
