Interior of the Pantheon, Rome, 1747. Creator: Giovanni Paolo Panini (Italian, 1691-1765)
Interior of the Pantheon, Rome, 1747. Created as a temple under the Roman emperor Hadrian around the year AD 125, the Pantheon became a Christian church in 609. Significant restoration took place in the early 1700s, a period of renewed attention to early Christian monuments. The site was a major monument of antiquity, an active church, and its portico, visible through the door, held the most important art fair in the city. Panini shows the complexity of this public space by representing foreign tourists, local churchgoers, Roman nobles, and artists mingling under the dome

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1747, offering a glimpse into the awe-inspiring interior of the Pantheon in Rome. Created by Giovanni Paolo Panini, an Italian artist renowned for his architectural paintings, this masterpiece showcases both the historical and cultural significance of this iconic structure. Originally built as a temple during the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian in AD 125, the Pantheon underwent significant restoration in the early 1700s. This period marked a renewed interest in preserving and appreciating early Christian monuments. The Pantheon had transformed into a Christian church by 609 AD and remained an active place of worship. Panini skillfully captures the complexity of this public space within his painting. As we gaze upon it, we witness foreign tourists marveling at its grandeur alongside local churchgoers seeking solace within its hallowed walls. Roman nobles grace its premises with their presence while artists immerse themselves in capturing its beauty on canvas. Through meticulous brushstrokes and vibrant colors, Panini transports us to a time when art fairs were held under the portico visible through the door. This bustling scene brings together people from different walks of life who have come together to appreciate not only religious sanctity but also artistic brilliance. Preserved on oil canvas and housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable piece by Giovanni Paolo Panini serves as a testament to Italy's rich heritage and stands as an enduring symbol of human creativity across centuries.
