Huntsman House, headquarters of Tetleys brewers, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968. The Tetley familys links with the beer industry reach back into the 1740s when William Tetley was described as a maltster in Armley. His son William then expanded the business, and it was then passed to his son Joshua. The original brewery was opened on the south banks of the river Aire in Leeds in 1822 and by the late 2000s 200 million pints of beer were being brewed on the site every year. Tetleys were taken over in 1998 by Danish brewers Carlsberg. In 2008, citing falling demand for beer as the reason, they announced plans to close the Leeds brewery in 2011 and move production to Northampton

Huntsman House - A Historic Brewing Legacy in Leeds, West Yorkshire
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the grandeur of Huntsman House, the iconic headquarters of Tetleys brewers in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Steeped in history and tradition, this building stands as a testament to the Tetley family's deep-rooted connections with the beer industry dating back to the 1740s. Originally established by William Tetley as a maltster in Armley, it was his son William who expanded their brewing enterprise. Eventually passing on the reins to his son Joshua, they opened their first brewery along the picturesque banks of River Aire in 1822. Over time, this site became synonymous with quality craftsmanship and produced an astounding 200 million pints annually by the late 2000s. However, despite its rich heritage and success over centuries, change loomed on the horizon. In 1998, Danish brewers Carlsberg acquired Tetleys amidst shifting dynamics within the beer market. Subsequently, plans were announced in 2008 to close down operations at Huntsman House by 2011 due to declining demand for beer. This decision marked an endearing era for both locals and enthusiasts alike. Through this mesmerizing image captured by Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , we are transported back to a time when Huntsman House stood tall as a symbol of British brewing excellence. Its architectural elegance harmoniously blended with industrial prowess—a true reflection of England's proud brewing legacy that will forever be etched into our collective memory.
