EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two remarkable studies by the legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci. Titled "Horse Rearing, and Horsemen and Foot-Soldiers" these sketches were created around 1504 as preliminary works for his renowned masterpiece, The Battle of Anghiari. Housed in the prestigious Royal Library at Windsor Castle, England, this print captures the essence of Italian Renaissance art. In this composition, da Vinci's mastery is evident through his meticulous attention to detail and use of vibrant colors. The focal point is a majestic horse rearing on its hind legs, exuding power and strength. Surrounding it are skillfully rendered horsemen and foot soldiers engaged in battle, showcasing their agility amidst chaos. The concept behind this artwork lies in capturing movement - an essential element that brings life to the scene. Da Vinci's ability to depict motion with such precision reflects his deep understanding of anatomy and his constant quest for perfection. Rendered primarily in red chalk on paper, these studies exemplify da Vinci's unparalleled talent as both an artist and a scientist. His fascination with horses is palpable here; he effortlessly captures their gracefulness while conveying the intensity of war. As we delve into this piece from one of history's greatest minds, we are transported back to 16th-century Italy - a time when art flourished under the patronage of influential rulers like those who preserved these treasures within Windsor Castle's Royal Library.
