EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in black and white, this print transports us back to the year 1914 at the Eye Room of Fulham School Treatment Centre in London. The image showcases a uniformed nurse and an optician diligently conducting an eye examination on a young girl. During this era, the Greater London Council (GLC) and the London County Council worked hand-in-hand to provide essential healthcare services to its residents. This particular photograph is a testament to their commitment towards promoting public health. The atmosphere within the room exudes professionalism as both the nurse and optician focus intently on their respective roles. The nurse's uniform signifies her dedication to caring for others, while the optician's expertise in vision science ensures accurate diagnoses. Intriguingly, despite being taken over a century ago, this image reminds us of how far medicine has advanced since then. It serves as a reminder of our collective progress in understanding ocular health and improving treatment methods. Although we may not know the identities of these individuals captured by an unknown photographer, their work undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping medical practices during that time period. This remarkable snapshot from Guildhall Library Art Gallery allows us to appreciate those who dedicated themselves to professions that contribute immensely towards society’s well-being.
