EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a moment in history that speaks volumes about the struggles faced by agricultural workers during the Great Depression. Taken in 1936 by renowned photographer Dorothea Lange, this image shows a cotton picker in the Southern San Joaquin Valley of California. The woman is depicted stooped over, her hands busy at work picking cotton from the fields. The stark contrast of light and shadow in this photograph emphasizes the harsh realities of farm labor during this time period. The cotton sack slung over her shoulder serves as a poignant symbol of the backbreaking work these individuals were forced to endure just to make ends meet. Dorothea Lange's keen eye for capturing raw emotion and human resilience is evident in every detail of this image. Through her lens, she sheds light on the economic hardships faced by those working tirelessly in America's agricultural industry.
