Chapel Beach, 1872. Creator: James H. Richardson
Chapel Beach, 1872. Waterfall and Chapel Rock (known as La Chapelle by early European explorers), Lake Superior, Michigan, USA. This rock-chapel is forty feet above the lake...a temple, with an arched roof of sandstone, resting partly on the cliff behind, and partly on massive columns, as perfect as the columned ruins of Egypt...the continuous wash of the water in and out through holes in the sides is like the low, opening swell of an organ voluntary...A manitou dwelt in this chapel...On the chapel-beach the Indians performed their rites to appease him. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Chapel Beach, 1872 - A Majestic Sanctuary on Lake Superior
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the enchanting beauty of Chapel Beach in 1872, a hidden gem nestled along the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan, USA. Created by James H. Richardson, this remarkable image showcases the awe-inspiring Chapel Rock, known as La Chapelle by early European explorers. Standing forty feet above the glistening lake waters, Chapel Rock resembles a magnificent temple with its arched sandstone roof resting gracefully on both the cliff behind and massive columns akin to ancient Egyptian ruins. The continuous ebb and flow of water through holes in its sides create a symphony reminiscent of an organ voluntary. Legend has it that within this rock-chapel resided a powerful Manitou - a spiritual being revered by Native American tribes who performed sacred rituals on Chapel Beach to appease him. This mystical connection between nature and spirituality adds an ethereal quality to this already breathtaking landscape. The black-and-white engraving from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant transports us back to the 19th century when untouched wilderness still thrived across our great country. Richardson's meticulous attention to detail brings every element of this scene vividly to life - from indigenous people going about their daily lives with children cradled in papooses and dogs frolicking on the beach, to canoes gently gliding through pristine waters. This print is not just a visual masterpiece but also serves as a testament to our rich heritage and natural wonders that continue to inspire generations even today.
