Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 130v, c. 1470. Creator: Master of the Geneva Latini (French

Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 130v, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the "Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 130v" created around 1470 by the Master of the Geneva Latini, an esteemed French illuminator. During this period, Rouen emerged as a prominent hub for book production, with its cathedral playing a pivotal role in commissioning and preserving valuable manuscripts. The city's cathedral boasted a prosperous chapter that spared no expense in acquiring books and maintaining an extensive library. It is likely that stationers and booksellers were concentrated around or near the cathedral precinct, contributing to Rouen's flourishing literary culture. The artist behind this masterpiece earned their name from a manuscript currently housed in Geneva. They served as Rouen's principal illuminator during the latter half of the 15th century, leaving an indelible mark on the region's artistic heritage. Crafted using ink, tempera, gold on vellum—a fine parchment made from animal skin—this exquisite manuscript exemplifies the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of medieval illumination. The intricate designs and vibrant colors bring to life religious texts intended for private devotion. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable print offers viewers a glimpse into both Rouen's rich history as a center for book production and the exceptional talent exhibited by Master of the Geneva Latini.
