Bag for sliding caliper used by Dr. Montague Cobb, mid 20th century. Creator: Unknown

William Montague Cobb (1904-1990) was an African-American physician, physical anthropologist and civil rights activist. A professor at Howard University, he contributed significantly to the development of the sub-discipline of biocultural anthropology: the scientific exploration of the relationships between human biology and culture. This is a rectangular light colored cotton bag with two sections, designed to hold a pair of calipers, a device used to measure the dimensions of an object. The single long pocket is divided in two by a piece of cotton, creating two pockets. There is a section of cloth that folds over the top of the bag, creating a flap. A string made of rolled up fabric is attached to the right corner of the flap. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © Heritage Art/Heritage Images
