EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of ancient aqueducts from various countries, providing a glimpse into the rich history of engineering and water transport. The image, taken in 1889 by W & AK Johnston, features remarkable remnants such as the Aqueduct of Metz in France, believed to be built during Roman times. Another impressive structure is the Aqueduct of Pont du Gard near Nismes, also Roman-built and spanning over the River Gardon. Moving on to France's Palace of Versailles, we find the Aqueduct of Maintenon constructed under Louis XIV's reign to supply water from the Eure River to its magnificent gardens. Italy contributes its own architectural marvel with the Ponte delle Torri aqueduct in Spoleto; an exquisite 13th-century construction possibly resting on Roman foundations. The photo also highlights two significant Welsh aqueducts designed by Thomas Telford: Chirk Aqueduct carrying Llangollen Canal across River Ceiriog near Wrexham and Dee Aqueduct at Froncysyllte crossing River Dee. These structures demonstrate Telford's ingenuity in canal engineering during the early 19th century. Overall, this print serves as a visual encyclopedia capturing diverse aqueducts that have shaped our understanding of ancient civilizations' advanced water supply systems. It invites viewers to appreciate these archaeological sites for their historical significance while marveling at their enduring beauty amidst ruins.
