Anne Robert Jacques Turgot (1727-1781), French politician and economist
Anne Robert Jacques Turbot (1727-1781), French politician and economist. Turgot was an advocate of free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics. As comptroller-general of finances (1774-1776), Turgot advocated radical reforms to the French economy and taxation system. His policies, particularly edicts abolishing guilds and levying taxation on all, including the nobility, made Turgot many enemies, and Louis XVI was persuaded to demand his resignation. Turgots edicts were repealed, but his conviction that the only alternative to radical reform was revolution proved to be correct in 1789

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the distinguished figure of Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, a prominent French politician and economist of the 18th century. Known for his advocacy of free trade and laissez-faire principles in economics, Turgot held the position of comptroller-general of finances from 1774 to 1776. During this time, he proposed radical reforms to transform the French economy and taxation system. Turgot's policies faced fierce opposition from various factions, particularly his edicts that abolished guilds and imposed taxes on all citizens, including the nobility. These controversial measures ultimately led to his resignation after pressure from King Louis XVI. Although his reforms were repealed at the time, history would prove Turgot's belief that only radical change or revolution could address France's deep-rooted issues. In this engraving by Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot himself (credited as Unknown), we see a profile view of a man who was ahead of his time in economic thinking. His determined expression reflects both his commitment to reformist ideals and the challenges he faced during his tenure as a statesman. This print serves as a reminder of Turgot's significant contributions to economics and politics in France during an era marked by profound social changes. It is an invaluable piece capturing one man's pursuit for progress amidst resistance—a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, Baron de l'Aulne.
