EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "JITTERBUGGERS, c1939. At the Savoy Ballroom, New York City" transports us back to the vibrant era of the Harlem Renaissance. The image captures a moment in time at the iconic Savoy Ballroom, where African American men and women gathered to dance their hearts out to the infectious rhythms of jazz. The interior of this bustling city club is alive with energy as couples gracefully move across the dance floor. Men dressed in sharp suits lead their elegantly attired partners in intricate jitterbug steps, showcasing their skill and passion for this popular dance style. The scene reflects daily life during this early period of North American history when African Americans sought refuge from racial discrimination through artistic expression. The Savoy Ballroom served as a sanctuary where they could freely express themselves through music and dance. This photograph not only captures a specific moment but also serves as a testament to the resilience and creativity of African Americans during that time. It reminds us of the power of art to transcend barriers and bring people together. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot, we are reminded of how far society has come since then while acknowledging that there is still work to be done towards achieving equality for all.
