EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "HARRIS: UNCLE REMUS, 1895. Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox" takes us back to the late 19th century America, where African American folk tales were cherished and passed down through generations. Created by Arthur Burdett Frost for the second edition of Joel Chandler Harris' renowned book, this pen-and-ink drawing beautifully captures a pivotal moment in one of these beloved stories. In this illustration, we see Brer Rabbit cunningly outsmarting his adversary, Brer Fox. The intricate details bring the characters to life as they engage in a battle of wits amidst a backdrop that reflects the turn of the century setting. The significance of this piece lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its representation of African American literature during a time when voices from this community were often marginalized. Through Uncle Remus' tales, Harris sought to preserve and celebrate an important aspect of African American culture. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of the power that storytelling holds - how it can bridge gaps between cultures and generations while preserving traditions that might otherwise be lost. This print serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Uncle Remus' stories and their impact on both children and adults alike.
