EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the haunting era of the Salem Witch Trials in 17th century America. The image portrays an old woman walking through the streets of Salem, Massachusetts, draped in an apron and wearing a mysterious black hat. She clutches onto a cane for support while her loyal feline companion follows closely by her side. The illustration, created by Howard Pyle in 1883, perfectly captures the atmosphere of suspicion that engulfed Salem during this dark time. As we gaze upon this scene, we can almost feel the weight of discrimination hanging heavily in the air. The storefronts lining the street serve as a backdrop to this unsettling moment in history. Pyle's accompanying poem titled "Ye True Story of Granny Greene of Salem Towne" adds another layer to our understanding of this enigmatic figure. It hints at mysticism and suggests that she may have been accused or suspected of practicing witchcraft herself. Through this thought-provoking artwork from Sarin Images / The Granger Collection, we are transported back to a period where fear and paranoia ruled over reason and compassion. It serves as a reminder not only of humanity's capacity for prejudice but also our enduring fascination with tales from our past.
