Ancient Archway In Tunisia
Carthage was the center or capital city of the ancient Carthaginian civilization, on the eastern side of the Lake of Tunis in what is now the Tunis Governorate in Tunisia.
The city developed from a Phoenician colony into the capital of an empire dominating the Mediterranean Sea during the first millennium BC.
The ancient city was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the Third Punic War in 146 BC then re-developed as Roman Carthage, which became the major city of the Roman Empire in the province of Africa. The Roman city was again occupied by the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb, in 698.
The site remained uninhabited, the regional power shifting to the medina of Tunis in the medieval period, until the early 20th century, when it began to develop into a coastal suburb of Tunis, incorporated as Carthage municipality in 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of an ancient archway in Tunisia, reminding us of the rich history and cultural significance of Carthage. Once a thriving center of the Carthaginian civilization, this city evolved from a Phoenician colony into a powerful empire that dominated the Mediterranean Sea during the first millennium BC. However, its glory was short-lived as it fell to Roman conquest in 146 BC during the Third Punic War. Reborn as Roman Carthage, it became a prominent city within the Roman Empire's province of Africa. Centuries later, Muslim conquerors took hold of this historic site in 698 AD. Abandoned and forgotten for centuries, Carthage relinquished its regional power to Tunis' medina until recent times. Nowadays, this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves as a reminder of past civilizations and is gradually transforming into a coastal suburb near Tunis. The remnants of old ruins like this archway stand tall against time's relentless passage. Through Stig Stockholm Pedersen's lens, we are transported back in time to witness an era long gone but not forgotten. This vertical color image showcases both the grandeur and decay that coexist within these ancient walls—each crack telling stories untold. This print invites us on an enchanting journey through history—a visual testament to human ingenuity and endurance across millennia. It beckons travelers seeking travel destinations steeped in ancient civilization to explore Tunisia's North African charm firsthand while immersing themselves in its fascinating past at every turn.
