EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned portrait takes us back to the bustling streets of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the late 19th century. The focal point of this image is the iconic Town Clock Store, proudly operated by S. Cooper & Brother for Zions Co-operative Mercantile Institution (ZCMI). Established in 1868 by the Mormon Church, ZCMI held the distinction of being America's first department store. The photograph showcases a snapshot of daily life during that era. A group of men and boys can be seen standing outside the shopfront, perhaps engrossed in conversation or eagerly awaiting their turn inside. The presence of these individuals highlights not only the significance of this establishment but also its role as a gathering place within the community. The attention to detail is remarkable; every element contributes to an authentic portrayal of history frozen in time. From intricate tools displayed on shelves to a prominent sign proudly bearing "ZCMI" each aspect reflects an era defined by craftsmanship and dedication. Otto Herschan's masterful composition captures both architectural beauty and historical importance with precision. Through his lens, we are transported back to an era where small businesses thrived amidst rapid urbanization. As we admire this print today, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also recognize it as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience—a reminder that even amid change, certain landmarks endure as symbols of community strength and unity.
